Zev was in the hospital for a few days

Last wednesday we attended a new baby's brit milah. During which Zev was acting very strange. Note the last entry was after their checkup and shots. So he was really whiny and whimpering and fussy, so much so it really became a burden to stay very long. On the walk home, since it was just down the street from us, Zev fell asleep so we thought it was just that. When we got home we got him ready for bed and we noticed he was breathing very hard. At first we thought it was nothing so we debated whether or not we should call the doctor. But erring on the side of caution, we called. When the nurse called back we described Zev's breathing and how hard it was and rapid. She asked us to count the breaths while she timed it, the nurse advised us to put him in a the bathroom with the shower so he can breathe in the steam. During this time, we noticed just how hard he was laboring to breathe. We called back and reported that there was no change so we were told to bring him to Children's Hospital. We drove as fast as we could through the streets with Zev crying the whole way. When we pulled up, Orli got car sick and threw up all over her self. It sucked. The parking attendant that was doing the valet asked us if we needed a doctor or a nurse to come out because she looked so sick. We were like "no, its the other baby, she's just car sick"
In the ER Zev's oxygen was not very good, so he was given meds through a nebulizer and put on oxygen. They worked a tiny bit, but they decided to admit him. By then it was 3am. He had some xrays and they took a mucus sample from his nose. Everything came back negative for RSV, Pneumonia, and the Flu.
Over Thursday he was still being treated with meds and a steriod. He wasn't interested in eating or drinking. He was really weak and lethargic so much that when the nurses came by to listen to his chest he didn't really stir or respond. That evening they decided to put an IV in. The first IV didn't take, he perked up from that procedure for sure but unfortunately they had to try two more times. That was tough.
He got better over that night, his breathing rate slowed down significantly and his oxygen was more stable so they took him off the oxygen. Zev started eating and feeling better so by Friday night they let us go home. During the last day Orli came by and stayed in the lobby. We really missed her so we took turns visiting with her. Orli gave Zev a balloon and when she saw Zev she hugged him. They have not been apart since they were born.
Mommy and Daddy are really tired, Zev came home with a nebulizer machine. We are just happy that he is ok now and we really hope it never happens again.
Diagnosis: Some kind of reactive airway disease, not exactly asthma, it is unknown why it happened, he did have a little chest cold. It is suspicious that it happened just about a few hours after the shots. Who really knows, nothing happened to Orli, we'll keep our eye out.

Wow, Lauren - that sounds really scary. I agree with you that it seems like he must have had a reaction to a shot. I'd keep track of exactly what they gave him that day. Look at me, giving medical advice and I'm not even a PA yet! I just can't help it.

Happy belated Mothers' Day; I can't believe I don't think to wish my friends that! :)
